Oromyofunctional Disorder in Adults
An oromyofunctional disorder (tongue thrust) is an improper tongue positioning and function pattern. In adults, this can affect speech clarity, swallowing, oral comfort, and may have been present since childhood or developed later.
Effects of Tongue Thrust
- Interdental lisp or other speech sound distortions
- Mouth breathing and associated dry mouth
- Difficulty with proper swallowing mechanics
- Tongue or jaw tension and fatigue
- Potential contribution to TMJ concerns
- Speech clarity concerns
Treatment Goals
Treatment focuses on: establishing proper tongue resting position, correcting swallowing patterns, improving oral motor strength and coordination, and retraining the oral muscles through systematic exercises and awareness building.
Adult Myofunctional Therapy
Adult therapy includes exercises to strengthen oral muscles, establish proper tongue position, correct eating/drinking patterns, and address associated habits. Results depend on motivation and consistency with home practice.
